Professor Pebley's research focuses on fertility and marriage patterns, children's health and welfare, and family organization in the
United States and other countries. She is past-President of the Population Association of America, and has collaborated with researchers and institutions in Central America, West, Central and East Africa, and
Bangladesh and
India. Currently she is serving as co-Director of the Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Survey (L.A.FANS), a longitudinal study of families in
Los Angeles County and the neighborhoods where they live.
